Dauphin Island, AL – 4R9 – 393nm

Mustang Beach, TX – RAS – 132nm
Mustang Beach Airport is one of the most unique airports in Texas. Its location offers pilots close and convenient access to Mustang Island’s gorgeous beaches. From the airport it’s a 5 minute walk to the beach or a $.50 trolley ride to the center of town with all its restaurants and shops, making it an easy day-trip or weekend destination. Spring is the best time to visit Mustang Beach in order to take advantage of its fine weather and popular events such as the Texas Sandfest, an international sand castle competition. Fredericksburg, TX – T82 – 173nm
Fredericksburg has been one of the most popular destinations for Texan pilots in search of the ultimate $100 burger for years. The airport’s legendary Hangar Hotel and Diner are built in a beautifully elegant style, reminiscent of the 1940s, and the Officer’s Club and balcony is a wonderful place to unwind for the night and share some good flying stories. Golfers can catch golf carts at the airport and access a private path to Lady Bird Johnson’s golf course. The quaint city of Fredericksburg is home to fantastic German food, unique architecture, inviting shops, and the popular National Museum of the Pacific War. Just outside of town, the famous Luckenbach dance hall and Becker Vineyards are popular side trips. With so much to see in Fredericksburg, it is certainly worth more than one visit!

Lake Charles, LA – LCH – 130nm
Who needs Vegas! For your gambling fix try flying yourself into Lake Charles. Leave in the evening for a gorgeous sunset transition through the Houston VFR corridor and use the rest of the quick flight to Lake Charles to plan your attack on the blackjack table. Once you land, catch a cab to L'Auberge du Lac Casino –the place to be in Lake Charles! They’ve got hot tables, great food, elegant rooms, and incredible entertainment. Be a rock star for a night! After all, you flew yourself in your own private plane to a Casino! When people next to you ask what type of plane you fly, look them in the eye and tell them! “You know the Air Force C130? That’s just a 130…I fly a 172”. If you haven’t gambled the plane away, sleep in the next morning before coming back home to Sugar Land.

San Antonio, TX – SSF – 148nm
In the evening, San Antonio’s River walk comes alive! For a nice night on the River walk, trying flying into San Antonio’s Stinson field, one of the oldest and most historic general aviation airports in the country. The folks at the airport will help arrange a $20 cab ride into town and then the night is yours! If you’ve done the River walk before, try something different. Skip the Mexican food and head for Dolores del Rio Ristorante on the northwest corner of the River walk. The restaurant is small –a real local hole-in-the-wall! So get there early for a good seat to enjoy the best Italian food, live jazz and belly dancing every night. For an overnight trip, there is no better choice than the historic Menger Hotel. On the way back to Stinson, catch the beautiful Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded in 1716.

New Braunfels, TX – BAZ – 124nm
Fly into New Braunfels to enjoy a refreshing and relaxing day at Schlitterbahn! For an even more rewarding vacation, spend the night at one of the park’s resorts. However, there is far more to see in New Braunfels than Schlitterbahn. The Natural Bridge Caverns are definitely worth a visit; for the adventurous, you can even try their demanding adventure tours, which have you climbing, crawling, and rappelling through the caverns and far off the beaten path. For the less adventurous, try wandering New Braunfels’ historic district and enjoy the quaint antiques, shops, and architecture.

Destin, FL – DTS – 479nm
